Lancer boys start off new year with a loss

Maybe it was rustiness from winter break. Maybe it was being away from their home court.

But whatever the reason, the SM East boys basketball game couldn’t hang on to finish a game they led for much of four quarters, falling to SM Northwest 52-43.

The Lancers took a sizeable lead in the first quarter, only to have the Cougars come back to take a 27-23 lead at the half. Sophomore Chase Hanna hit two three pointers at the start of the fourth quarter, giving the Lancers a boost. But the Cougars matched their play, and the score was tied at 42 with about three minutes left.

But Cougar standout A.J. Spencer took over to close out the game, scoring six unanswered points — including a full-fledged dunk — that ultimately put the game out of reach.

The loss brings the Lancers’ season record to 4-2. They will face Leavenworth High School at home Friday at 7 p.m.
