Ward Parkway Trader Joe’s could be in jeopardy if KCMO doesn’t make liquor exemption

The sign hanging over the proposed space for Trader Joe's at Ward Parkway won't be accurate unless the Kansas City city council takes action.

The plan to put in a Trader Joe’s at Ward Parkway is in a woozy state after Kansas City, Mo. officials recognized a conflict with the city’s liquor ordinances.

Kansas City law prohibits the sale of packaged liquor — like the beer and wine offered at Trader Joe’s — near residential areas. The city would have to pass a special exemption of the ordinance for Ward Parkway before construction on the grocery store could begin.

Kansas City councilman John Sharp told the KC Business Journal last week that a council committee would address the issue at a meeting tomorrow, Dec. 15, with a full council vote expected Thursday.
