Lancers pull out season opening win against SM South in overtime

They may have needed some extra time on the clock to do it, but the SM East boys basketball team opened its 2010-11 campaign with a win at SM South Friday.

The Lancers put out a solid offensive performance in the first half, led by sophomore Vance Wentz’s 11 points. The Lancers hadn’t let the Raiders take the lead in the game as the fourth quarter started, but a quick basket by SM South as the final period of regulation opened broke a 31-31 tie, and suddenly it looked like the Lancers had their hands full. The Raiders weren’t able to pull away in the closing minutes, but they did have a chance at a game-winning shot just before the clock expired.

Overtime saw the teams trading fouls and heading to the free throw line time and again. The Lancers were able to make their shots from the charity stripe, and ultimately went on to a 51-46 victory.
