Weekend planner: Trips to Bethlehem and back in time

A few fun ideas for your weekend:

  • Decorate for the holidays. Take a page from Mike Babick and the houses on Candy Cane Lane and get your house decked out. Or at least get a Christmas tree if you haven’t already. Here’s a list of local lots.
  • Kick off SM East’s boys basketball season. The Lancers head to SM South tonight for a 7 p.m. tip off to their 2010-11 season.
  • Take a trip to the Middle East. Southminster Presbyterian’s annual Journey to Bethlehem is in its 25th year. The event features a kind of living nativity scene, with church members reenacting scenes from Mary and Joseph’s trip to the city of Jesus’ birth. More than 700 people attend the event each year. The event runs 6-9 p.m. Friday and 5-8 p.m. Saturday at the church, 6306 Roe Ave.
  • Take a trip back in time. The Shawnee Indian Mission will be hosting its annual holiday open house. The event will feature 1800s holiday decorations, refreshments, and children’s craft projects, with music provided by the Kansas City Flute Choir, Gentle Hearts Gospel, the Prairie Dulcimer Club, students from St. Agnes School, the Kaw Valley Shape Note Signing Association, and Suzuki Violins. The event runs 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday, and 1-5 p.m. Sunday at the Mission, 3403 West 53 Street.
