Lady Lancers fall to Aquinas in season opener

The Lancers' Elizabeth Ward couldn't get a hand on Saints freshman Kelly Sweeney's jumpshot, which sank in the fourth quarter.

So maybe it wasn’t the opening first year girls basketball coach Scott Stein had hoped for…

The Lady Lancers fell to St. Thomas Aquinas 58-38 in their first game of the year Thursday before a good sized crowd in the SM East gym. Aquinas relied on a big night from senior Nelly Weledji, who led the Saints with 19 points.

Lancers senior Molly Rappold led SM East with nine points. Senior Logan Weckbaugh had eight.

On the bright side, the freshman and sophomore teams both defeated Aquinas (thanks to commenter Steve for the heads up).

The Lancers face Blue Valley North at 7 p.m. Monday at SM East.

More photos after the jump.

Coach Scott Stein tries to get the team to rally during a third quarter break.
Shannon McGinley watched in mid-air as Aquinas's Haleigh Cindrich, who is 6'3", made a drive on the basket.
