After 33 days of drilling, the 33 Chilean miners who’d been trapped underground since Aug. 5 are all back safely on the surface thanks to the work of a 128-year-old company based in Mission Woods, Kan.

Layne Christensen Co., which manages drilling projects around the world, pulled two of its best drillers from other projects and sent them to the San Jose mine in Chile. The Layne Christensen team broke through to the miners on Saturday, allowing the rescue capsule to be lowered so the men could be cranked back up to the surface one by one.

Layne Christensen’s world headquarters are located at the intersection of Shawnee Mission Parkway and State Line Road, just west of Pembroke Hill.
