Weather was a dud, but 5,000 turned out for VillageFest

Event organizers estimate that despite cloudy skies and blustery winds, 5,000 people came out to the municipal grounds near city hall yesterday for the annual VillageFest Fourth of July celebration. More than 800 attendees ate at the pancake breakfast, and the organizers of the Headstrong for Jake bike rally gave away more than 400 bike helmets in just 90 minutes.

The event also featured the naming of recipients for civic awards. Johnny’s and its owner, Pat Roberts, received the Business Community Spirit Award for their support of schools and other organizations. Prairie Village resident Marilyn Uppman received the Lifetime Spirit Award for her decades of volunteer work.
