People: It’s time to get real here. The Christmas season is just about officially over. Which means it’s time to start thinking about taking down your tree in the next week or so.

Luckily, northeast Johnson County residents have a number of options for disposing of their trees.

  • In Prairie Village, residents can take their trees to designated drop off spots at Taliaferro, Franklin and Porter Parks through Jan. 12. Trees left at these spots will be recycled through processing by a chipper. (Residents are free to take any of the wood chips for their own use). Note that trees left at the recycling points must be completely free of all decorations, including lights and ornaments, as such items would damage the chipper.
  • In Roeland Park, the city has again set up a tree drop-off site for residents at the corner 48th Street and Roe Boulevard. The drop-off site will be open through mid-January.
  • In Merriam, the city has a special tree pick up program that will take place the first week of January. Trees must be placed curbside by 7 a.m. on days for the corresponding locations:
    • Monday, Jan. 4: North side of 75th Street to the South Side of 67th Street, and east side of Switzer to the west side of Antioch
    • Tuesday, Jan. 5: North side of 67th Street to the south side of Johnson Drive, and east side of Switzer to the west side of Antioch.
    • Wednesday, Jan. 6: North side of 67th Street to the south side of 54th Terrace, and east side of Antioch to the west side of Lowell.
    • Thursday, Jan. 7: North side of Johnson Drive to the south side of 53rd Street, and west side of Antioch to the east side of Switzer.
    • Friday, Jan. 8: North side of 53rd Street to the south side of 47th Street, and west side of Antioch to the east side of Switzer.
  • Prairie Village, Leawood, Mission Hills and Mission residents can also leave their trees by the curb during their regular trash pick up days, and Deffenbaugh Industries will pick them up with additional yard waste. Note that trees taller than six feet must be cut in half for Deffenbaugh to remove them. Trees can only be placed at the curb the first two weeks of January.
  • Fairway, Westwood and Westwood Hills residents can leave their trees by the curb for pick up by Town and Country Disposal on their normal trash days. The trees will be treated as yard waste, and as such must be cut into sections no longer than four feet each.
