Justin P. Gonzalez, the 23 year old Mission resident convicted of involuntary manslaughter after hitting an Iraq war veteran over the head with a beer bottle at a Lawrence party in 2012, was sentenced Tuesday to 32 months in prison.
Gonzalez was convicted in June after his first trial, in December 2013, ended with a hung jury.
Gonzalez’s attorney lobbied for probation, but Judge Peggy Kittel ultimately sided with relatives of Nicholas Sardina, who died several hours after the fight with Gonzalez from a blot clot in his brain. During the sentencing hearing, Gonzalez let the court know he had recently gotten a full time job after completing an internship with an accounting firm.
Gonzalez will be required to register as a public offender. After he completes his prison sentence, he will be required to complete 24 months of post-release supervision. His attorney indicated they plan to file an appeal.
