New York Times Editorial Board calls Kansas tax cuts “ruinous”. The New York Times Editorial Board used the Sunday opinion page to cast doubt on Gov. Sam Brownback’s administration’s claims that the state’s revenue crisis was triggered in part by the wealthy selling off stock, among other “excuses.” “There was only one reason for the state’s plummeting revenues,” the board wrote, “and that was the spectacularly ill-advised income tax cuts that Mr. Brownback and his fellow Republicans engineered in 2012 and 2013.” The editorial also took issue with Brownback’s characterization of the situation as akin to the state having gone through surgery, and needing time to recover. “… [I]t’s not clear the patient can recover from this surgery — the reserve fund, in fact, is likely to nearly run dry next year. As Kansas has clearly shown, states cannot cut their way to prosperity. They need to use every tool of government to nurture growth, and those tools require money,” they wrote.
