Noodle fans, rejoice: Construction is under way on a space approved for a new location for Lulu’s, the popular Thai noodle restaurant, in Westwood.
Owner Malisa Monyakula received approval from the Westwood Planning Commission in December to gut the former Charlie Williams Import Car Center at 47th and Belinder and turn it into an Asian bistro. At the time, however, financing for the project wasn’t secure at the time, and it was unclear whether the project would be able to move forward.
But crews are in the process of cleaning out the interior of the space at present, apparently the first steps toward bringing a Lulu’s location to northeast Johnson County.
Monyakula, a Westwood resident, opened her first restaurant in Lawrence in 1997, and then a restaurant in the Crossroads in 2000. She relocated to her current Crossroads space at 2030 Central in early 2011. Monyakula was born in Bangkok to an American mother and Thai and Swiss father.
In December Monyakula told the planning commission that the new restaurant would seat 82 and have a menu that would reflect all of southeast Asia.
Monyakula did not respond to requests this week seeking comment on the likely opening date for the restaurant.
