SM East softball team got off to what coach Mike Keener characterizes as “a slow start” this season.

But heading into this afternoon’s regionals game against SM Northwest, Keener thinks anything is possible.
“They’ve shown that they can play with anybody the face,” he said. “We’ve improved in every area since the start of the year. We’re strong up the middle. We’re capable of playing every free ball — and we have to do that to battle all these teams.”
“Battle” in an appropriate descriptor for the types of games the Lancers have found themselves in throughout the season. SM East has had more than its fair share of extra innings games, taking SM South and Olathe Northwest past the seven regulations innings in the past few weeks. The Lancers lost to SM Northwest when they met earlier this season 1-0 in a 10 inning game. At 11-9, the Lancers are ranked fifth overall in the regionals bracket. SM Northwest, 8-12, is the eight seed.
Keener said the Lancers will rely on the experience of their senior-heavy starting lineup and the pitching of Rowan Turner and Shelby Harvey in the playoffs.
“Rowan is going to be tough on anybody she faces,” he said. “She’s back in the groove.
SM East’s game against SM Northwest starts Wednesday at 4:45 p.m at the Olathe District Activity Center. Should the Lancers win, they would play in the regionals final against the winner of second-seeded Olathe South (16-4) and SM North (3-15) Wednesday evening.
