The Kansas legislature this weekend gave final approval to a bill that, if signed into law by Gov. Brownback, would void city-level bans on openly carried firearms in Prairie Village and Leawood.
Sen. Kay Wolf, whose district includes Prairie Village and north Leawood, abstained from the Senate’s initial vote on the bill, citing ambivalence about its provisions. But she voted no Friday on the version of the bill that contained edits from the House. The final senate vote was 37-2. Wolf said that, “Ultimately, my belief in local control was the deciding factor on the final vote.”
The bill passed the House Saturday 102-19. Northeast Johnson County Reps. Barbara Bollier, Stephanie Clayton, Emily Perry and Melissa Rooker all voted against the bill.
