We’ve gotten a couple of inquiries this week about the sign at the southeast corner of the intersection of 75th Street and Mission Road proclaiming, “Please slow down! Most accidents in Prairie Village occur right here.” So we thought we’d check in with the police department and find out just how prevalent accidents at that intersection really are.
Here’s what we learned: In 2013, there were a total of 413 traffic accidents in Prairie Village. Of those, 11 occurred at the intersection of 75th Street and Mission. In 2012, the numbers were 478 and 14, respectively. (So, technically, it’s not “most accidents,” but “more accidents than anywhere else.”)
Prairie Village Police Capt. Wes Lovett said most of the accidents at the intersection occur as a result of drivers following too closely or driving inattentively. More than half of the accidents at the intersection are rear-end accidents, and it’s common for one of the cars involved to be stopped.
So what can people do to prevent accidents at the intersection?
“Pay more attention,” Lovett said. Good advice.
