A Prairie Village woman escaped from her burning house early this morning, but her five cats were not as lucky.
Firefighters were called to the home in the 8000 block of Windsor Drive at 5:06 a.m. Battalion Chief Ed Barger of Consolidated Fire District No. 2 said smoke detectors had gone off in the house and the homeowner had escaped from the blaze when firefighters arrived. Her cats, though, did not survive.
The one-story house sustained significant damage from the heavy smoke and fire, which took firefighters approximately 20 minutes to contain. Investigators were arriving at the scene shortly before 6:30 a.m. to determine the cause of the fire.
Fire officials said the occupant was an older woman who lived alone and that she had been able to contact family members for a place to stay. Scorch marks were visible on the front door as firefighters were rolling up their hoses and preparing to clear the scene shortly after 6 a.m.
Consolidated had three units at the fire and Leawood sent one unit and a battalion chief to assist.
