It’s an election year and at least one Prairie Village ward already has enough candidates registered to necessitate a primary contest to narrow the field. Moreover, the decision of three Prairie Village incumbents not to seek reelection means fully a quarter of the city council seats will have new occupants come this April.
Prairie Village, Mission, Westwood and Leawood all have municipal elections this spring for city council members and Leawood and Mission will have mayoral elections. Candidates have already started filing for the city offices, but only one primary has developed so far.
In all but Westwood, one of the two council seats in each ward is up for election. In Westwood, three of the five council seats will be elected at-large.
Three candidates have filed for the Ward 5 seat in Prairie Village, setting off a primary vote on Feb. 25. Candidates still have until Jan. 21 to file for the city elections, so more primary contests could develop. The general election will be held April 1.
