The first renovation at the Village Shops will begin in November with streetscape work on the north end of Mission Lane at Tomahawk Road.
The Community Improvement District agreement between the city and the shopping center owner required renovation work to begin by November 2012 and be completed by late 2015. The Prairie Village Plan Commission approved a site plan for a one section of the center so the deadline could be met while waiting for a more comprehensive plan for the remainder of the changes that are coming.
Action around an anticipated drive-through in a building to replace the Waid’s restaurant was continued.
Commissioners also approved a plat for the shops, relieving the developer of providing a bike trail easement through the center on either Mission Road or Mission Lane. City staff had recommended that a full easement be provided so the city trail system could extend through the center on the east side and connect planned trail sections that converge at Village shops.
The developer had objected to the requirement, saying that a bike trail on Mission Lane would be unsafe and that Mission Road side did not provide sufficient space.
The commission approved the plat with the developer granting an easement between the two bank buildings along Mission Road with the expectation that the trail could extend south to 71st Street if and when there are future alterations to commercial buildings along the street.
