Two teams. Two years. Four state titles.
The SM East athletics department appears to be closing 2010-2011 strong, with two teams successfully defending their state titles — while another is headed to the state tournament for the first time in years.
The girls swim and dive team won it second consecutive state title Saturday, putting in a dominating performance that easily surpassed second place finisher Olathe Northwest. Junior Marston Fries anchored the victory with two individual event wins and a strong showing in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
The good news kept coming Monday, as the Lancers boys golf team won the state tournament by seven strokes, besting second place finisher Olathe East. The Lancers boys have now won three of the past four state tournaments.
And the winning may not be over. With two wins in the regional tournament last weekend, the Lancers baseball team qualified for its first appearance at state in a number of years. They’ll take the field at the University of Kansas Friday at 1:30 against Wichita Northwest.
